ABM-utvikling (the Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority) is a public institution under the authority of the Norwegian Ministry of Culture. ABM-utvikling plays a vital role in the strategic development of the archive, library and museum sectors in Norway. ABM-utvikling is an advisory body for the Ministry of Culture and helps provide a policy fundament for the archive, library and museum sectors.
ABM-utvikling is currently under reorganisation. Effective from 1 July 2010, the National Library is responsible for all tasks relating to library services. As of 1 January 2011, ABM-utvikling will be co-organised with the Arts Council Norway. All tasks relating to museums and archives will be continued within this new organisation. The new administrative director of Arts Council Norway will be Anne Aasheim.
Knowledge sources in archives, libraries and museums include art, sound, photography, film, archival material and literature. New information technology provides easier access to these sources, also across the traditional sector boundaries. ABM-utvikling was established in 2003 to encourage good use of knowledge sources in and across archives, libraries and museums. This implies, among other things, that archives, libraries and museums are encouraged to use new technology in knowledge production and curation, and to reach new user groups.
Initiatives
ABM-utvikling supports actions and initiatives designed to assist archives and museums in taking an active part in society. ABM-utvikling aims to encourage archives, libraries and museums to use presentation modalities that promote democratic values. In this perspective, ABM-utvikling has focused on how archives, libraries and museums can promote democratic rights and, in particular, minorities’ history and culture. ABM-utvikling has a strong focus on access for all and works with empowerment methodologies in order to include new user groups and new perspectives in the institutions.
Project funding
ABM-utvikling is responsible for the distribution of public funding for cooperation and development projects within the archive and museum sector. In 2010, around EUR 4 million has been distributed to over 100 projects. ABM-utvikling is also responsible for allocating annual governmental subsidies to a ten-fold number of non-governmental institutions in the field.
ABM-utvikling encourages initiatives across the sectors as well as innovative projects in archives and museums.
